Why your skin gets acne on vacation and what you can do about it

So August is here and that means that most of us are already on vacation or getting ready for this long-awaited summer break. While on vacation though, the mind may be calmer and more relaxed but this doesn't mean it happens the same for your skin.

During your summer holidays, the changes of your environment (temperature, humidity), sun exposure and skincare routine laziness cause some serious "stress" to our skin which fights back with lack of hydration and signs of acne.

What causes breakouts during your summer holidays

Flights

"Airplane Acne" is actually a thing and a term used to describe the oiliness of the "T-zone" and acne that develops during a flight. This is caused by low cabin humidity levels during  flights. The average humidity in the airplane cabin drops by 20%, so within minutes your skin experiences a huge environmental change that causes an immediate loss of hydration. As our skin does not have the time to adapt to this change, an accumulation of extra oiliness is created under this new dehydrated cells.

Sea salt and the pool clorine

Of course, nothing can keep you away from the dips in the sea you've been longing for all winter. However, the saltiness of the sea and the chlorine in the pool dehydrate your skin, resulting in more wrinkles and acne in the most visible parts of your face (oops!).

Hotel toiletries

We know it's very tempting to keep your suitcase as light as possible by leaving some skincare products at home but think again before relying on hotel products for your skin care. Most of them, since they are being made in mass productions of hundreds of thousands items by their manufacturers come with formulas that keep them low cost to made. For this reason, their ingredients are being quite harsh on the skin most of the times are super low quality. So.. .it's a no.

The lack of proper hygiene

During holidays we're more flexible with our boundaries and habits and that's how it should be. You won't be too bothered about not being able to wash properly your beach towel; you'll just leave it to dry before using it again the next day. However, if you find yourself naping at the beach in such a way that your face touches the towel, do not be surprised by the pimples that you will see almost instantly. The same goes for your makeup brushes.

Yes, but you know better than that...

What can you do to minimize skin stress during your holidays?

Keep your self hydrated with lots of water and moisturizing products. Your skin is thirsty during your vacation and if there's one thing you don't want to happen, it's to constantly have that unpleasant dehydrating tight skin feeling.

To avoid this, use products with hyaluronic acid, which has the ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, and do masks with aloe and panthenol that will relieve your skin from sun exposure.
